The Samsung Lions of professional baseball took their first loss after two consecutive wins in the playoffs.
Samsung lost 0-1 to the LG Twins in Game 3 of the playoffs at Jamsil Stadium on Sunday. Starting pitcher Hwang Dong-jae pitched well with three scoreless innings, but his team lost due to lack of commitment by the batters.
Samsung made batting order with center fielder Kim Ji-chan, left fielder Kim Heon-gon, right fielder Yoon Jung-bin, first baseman Lewin Diaz, designated hitter Park Byung-ho, catcher Kang Min-ho, third baseman Kim Young-woong, shortstop Lee Jae-hyun and second baseman Ryu Ji-hyuk, while captain Koo Ja-wook was out due to a ligament injury in his left knee.
Samsung showed its strength to score as many as 20 points in the first and second games, but showed lethargy in scoring chances in the game.
Coach Park Jin-man said after the game, "Baseball has to be scored to win. The ball of opposing starters Lim Chan-kyu and Hernandez was good."
The difference in size between Daegu Samsung Lions Park and Jamsil Stadium also adversely affected Samsung. The Samsung Lions deployed seven pitchers including starting pitcher Hwang Dong-jae, left-handers Lee Seung-hyun, Song Eun-bum, Kim Yoon-soo, Lee Sang-min, Kim Tae-hoon, and Lim Chang-min. They managed to keep the bullpen in check by allowing just one run. "Bulpen pitchers did a good job as expected. They prepared well for the operation of the bullpen and the pitchers performed their roles well," coach Park Jin-man said.
"Kim Yoon-soo was so confident in his team's performance against Austin that I would deploy him if there was a situation," Kim said. "I have faith in him because he is blocking him well." In the first and second games, Kim faced Austin at the risk of scoring a point, and defended well with strikeouts and ground balls in the infield. In the third showdown, he threw the first 156 kilometers of pitches, catching the out with a fly ball to the right field.
